Days after Washington doubled the tariff on India for buying Russian oil, New Delhi Saturday welcomed the understanding reached between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet in Alaska with an eye on ending the war in Ukraine. The leaders are set to hold in-person talks on August 15, in what is being seen as a potential breakthrough.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it “welcomes the decision of the two leaders meeting in Alaska” and hopes it will pave the way for peace between Russia and Ukraine. Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark that “this is not an era of war,” the ministry added that India endorses the upcoming summit meeting and stands ready to support these efforts.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had earlier in the day warned that any agreement reached without Kyiv’s participation would not lead to genuine peace. He reiterated that Ukraine’s territorial integrity is non-negotiable and that no land would be ceded to Russia. Zelenskyy also criticised recent comments by President Trump suggesting that a peace deal could involve territorial swaps, calling such proposals unacceptable.
