The 19-year-old, accused of the alleged circulation of objectionable photos and videos involving women and minor girls in Maharashtra’s Amravati district, was produced before a court and remanded to seven days of police custody on Wednesday.
Ayan Ahmed Tanveer Ahmed, also known as Ayaz, was arrested earlier in connection with the case. During the investigation, officers also detained three additional suspects, including one Uzer Khan.
According to sources, both Ayaz and Uzer confessed to their involvement during questioning.
Investigators were now working to corroborate the statements and determine the roles played by each of the accused.
Meanwhile, police seized Ayaz’s mobile phone and were examining it for digital evidence.
Investigators were probing whether the accused shared the videos within his circle, and whether others were involved in circulating the material further.
Sources indicated that the minors were systematically targeted through WhatsApp and Snapchat groups allegedly created to identify and exploit victims.
One Ayan Ahmed Tanvir Ahmed, a 19-year-old resident of Paratwada in Amravati district, was earlier arrested after obscene pictures and videos featuring him with women and girls surfaced on social media.
“Prima facie, the victims seem to be minors. The accused allegedly lured them, took obscene photos and videos against their will, and uploaded them on social media to defame the victims," the Paratwada police said, according to news agency PTI.
SIT FORMED TO FAST-TRACK PROBE
As the case widened, authorities constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a focused and time-bound probe into the matter.
The SIT was formed as a dedicated unit comprising 10 experienced police officers supported by 36 personnel, all tasked with working exclusively on the case.
LEGAL PROVISIONS INVOKED IN THE CASE
A case was registered against the accused under Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to the sale and distribution of obscene content, along with Sections 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which pertain to sexual assault and sexual harassment.
Relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act were also invoked, police said.
Police said that none of the victims had initially approached authorities in connection with the case.
Officials have appealed to victims and their families to come forward and cooperate with the investigation, assuring them that their identities will be protected.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Anil Bonde, who hails from Amravati, demanded a wider probe into the matter, claiming that more individuals may be involved.
He alleged that a group had created Snapchat and WhatsApp channels for such offences and urged investigators to examine digital communication records to trace possible associates.
