Jaipur’s Hathi Gaon- a settlement housing over 100 elephants on the outskirts of the Rajasthan capital- hosted a birthday celebration for Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries. The event was organised by the Hathi Gaon Vikas Samiti and the centrepiece of the celebration was a cake-cutting ceremony involving three elephants- Hathi Babu, Hathini Pushpa and Hathini Chanda- who participated using their trunks.

A fruit buffet weighing approximately 3,000 kg was arranged for the elephants, comprising bananas, apples, watermelons, sugarcane, jaggery, green fodder, papaya, oranges and other seasonal fruits. Mahouts- the elephant handlers who care for the animals around the clock- were also felicitated at the event. They received ration kits, footwear, caps, clothing and other utility items.

The elephants were decorated in traditional Rajasthani style for the occasion. Local administration and the Animal Welfare Department supported the Samiti in organising the event. Visitors were requested to observe from a distance and avoid disturbing the animals.

Hathi Gaon Vikas Samiti president Shafiq Ballu Khan said preparations had been underway for several days. The village was established in 2010 by the Rajasthan government to provide permanent, structured housing for elephants and their mahout families.

Anant Ambani is the founder of Vantara- a 3,500-acre wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and conservation centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, that is considered one of the largest of its kind in the world. The facility houses over 200 species, including elephants, tigers and leopards rescued from abuse and neglect. Anant Ambani has also contributed funds toward elephant welfare at several temples and institutions. The Samiti said it was this association that prompted them to mark his birthday at the village.
