In a tragic turn of events, a 52-year-old man died after a compound wall collapsed on him following heavy rain in west Bengaluru’s Vijayanagar on Friday, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Shivaboraiah, a resident of Attiguppe, who made a living by driving an autorickshaw. A preliminary probe revealed that Shivaboraiah had brought his mother and wife to the hospital, dropped them off at the entrance, and driven to the next lane to avoid a traffic pile-up.
A senior police officer told The Hindu that the wall of the Vijayanagar Club collapsed directly onto the autorickshaw in which Shivaboraiah was sitting. Passers-by noticed the incident and rushed to his rescue, but the debris had killed Shivaboraiah on the spot.
“The wall was located right next to a swimming pool, and the rain appears to have weakened the structure, which seems to be the primary reason. However, only a detailed probe can reveal the exact cause,” he said.
The Vijayanagar police have taken up a complaint, and an unnatural death report will be filed, according to the police.
The incident comes close on the heels of the Lady Curzon and Bowring Hospital compound wall collapse tragedy, in which seven people were killed on April 29.
The tragedy has unfolded despite the Bengaluru city corporations intensifying efforts to remove dilapidated structures across the city. The corporations had even formed special teams for the purpose and directed them to conduct audits.
