Israel and Lebanon begin US mediated talks to seek peaceful relations, Yechiel Leiter leads Israel side, rare call held with Lebanese envoy before Tuesday meeting.

Israel on Monday said US-brokered talks with Lebanon was going on with the aim to disarm the terrorist organization Hezbollah and a meeting would be held on Tuesday.

“A dialogue has begun between the State of Israel and Lebanon, mediated by the United States, with the goal of disarming the terrorist organization Hezbollah, removing the terror threat from Lebanon, and establishing peaceful relations between the countries," the spokesperson of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.

They further said that the ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon to the US held talks with the US ambassador to Lebanon during the weekend and it was agreed that a meeting would take place on Tuesday.

This came after Scranton-born Yechiel Leiter was announced as the leader chairing the peace talks with Lebanon.

“Yechiel Leiter is a talented diplomat, an articulate speaker, and has a deep understanding of American culture and politics. I am convinced he will represent the State of Israel in the best way," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said while announcing his appointment.

Soon after taking charge, Leiter held a rare phone call with his Lebanese counterpart, Nada Hamadeh Moawad, over the weekend. The conversation marked a break from long-standing protocol, as Israel and Lebanon do not have formal diplomatic relations.

Lebanon was drawn into the latest phase of the West Asia conflict after Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel following US-Israeli strikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28.
