The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, is set to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, seeking to formally recognise Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh. The proposed legislation aims to provide statutory clarity to the capital status of Amaravati, aligning with the policy direction pursued by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led NDA government in the state.

The development is being seen as a key step toward resolving long-standing uncertainty over Andhra Pradesh’s capital framework, which has remained a politically contentious issue since the state’s bifurcation in 2014.

BACKING FROM STATE ASSEMBLY

The legislative move at the Centre follows a resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on March 28, endorsing Amaravati as the single capital of the state. The resolution reflected the state government’s position that administrative, legislative, and judicial functions should be consolidated in Amaravati.

The amendment is expected to reinforce the legal standing of Amaravati as the capital under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

POLITICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE SIGNIFICANCE

The issue of Andhra Pradesh’s capital has been a major political flashpoint over the past several years, with competing proposals earlier suggesting a three-capital model involving Visakhapatnam and Kurnool for executive and judicial functions respectively. The current move signals a policy consolidation in favour of Amaravati as the central administrative hub.

If passed, the amendment could provide greater certainty for infrastructure development, governance planning, and investment decisions linked to the capital region.

The Bill’s introduction in Parliament is expected to trigger debate among political parties, particularly on issues related to regional balance, administrative efficiency, and long-term development strategy for Andhra Pradesh.
