Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan on Tuesday called for transforming the state’s rich handicrafts sector into a globally recognised industry, saying that while Andhra Pradesh’s traditional crafts have already earned international recognition, greater marketing efforts are needed to unlock their full potential.Addressing artisans after inaugurating the Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Festival at Ambedkar Kala Vedika in Vijayawada, the deputy chief minister stressed that the govt’s priority is not only to promote handicrafts but also to improve the welfare of the artisans who preserve the state’s cultural legacy.Pawan Kalyan announced that the govt would focus on the health and education of artisans and their families. He said regular health check-ups would be conducted for craftsmen across the state and adequate support would be extended to ensure that their children receive quality education.“Handicrafts are the roots of India. If we want to preserve our culture and traditions, we must protect our artisans and their crafts,” he said. “The greatness of a nation is not reflected merely in its buildings but in the creativity and dedication of its artists.”Describing Andhra Pradesh as the birthplace of several traditional handicraft forms, Pawan Kalyan said the remarkable products created by artisans represent generations of skill, dedication and cultural heritage.
“Behind every masterpiece is the hard work of an artisan who keeps centuries-old traditions alive,” he remarked. The deputy chief minister said more than two lakh artisans are engaged in the handicrafts sector across the state. The govt, he added, is working to connect them with international markets and provide better branding and marketing opportunities to increase their incomes.Highlighting the importance of sustainable development, Pawan Kalyan said the govt is also exploring innovative products made from discarded textiles instead of allowing them to go to waste.
Such initiatives, he noted, would generate livelihoods while protecting the environment.Calling upon artisans to embrace innovation without compromising tradition, he urged them to work towards the vision of “Local to Global.” He assured that the govt would make every effort to ensure that the craftsmanship of artisans from even the remotest villages reaches markets across the world.
