Apple's "e" lineup has always carried a simple promise: the iPhone experience, without the iPhone price tag. With the iPhone 17e, Apple's most affordable smartphone of 2026, that promise holds firm.

Designed to bring flagship-level performance to a wider audience, the 17e pairs the powerful A19 chip with iOS 26 to deliver smooth performance, reliable battery life, and access to Apple's latest features — all at a price that won't break the bank.

We spent time with the iPhone 17e to see whether it lives up to Apple's claims. Here's our full verdict.

Design

The iPhone 17e carries forward the clean, minimalist aesthetic of its predecessor, the iPhone 16e, with subtle refinements that help it stand out as Apple's most accessible smartphone of 2026.

Built from aerospace-grade aluminum, it feels strong yet lightweight in hand, and its IP68 rating ensures solid resistance to dust, water, and splashes. The front is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which offers three times better scratch resistance compared to the previous generation, while the glass back lends the device a premium feel despite its lower price point.Apple has kept the overall footprint compact, making the 17e comfortable to hold and easy to use single-handed.

It comes in three color options — White, Black, and Soft Pink — and our review unit arrived in Soft Pink, a soothing and attractive finish. In terms of button layout, the power button sits on the right side. Note that, unlike the iPhone 17, there is no Camera Control button. The programmable Action button, volume rockers, and SIM card tray are all on the left, while the USB-C charging port and speaker grille are located at the bottom.

The iPhone 17e may not boast the ultra-thin bezels or exotic materials found on Apple's flagship lineup, but it delivers a refined look and feel that punches well above its price. It's a design that balances premium craftsmanship with everyday practicality.

Display

The iPhone 17e sports a 6.1-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display with a resolution of 1170 x 2532 pixels, protected by Ceramic Shield 2. Colors appear vivid and accurate thanks to wide color (P3) support and True Tone technology, which automatically adjusts white balance to suit ambient lighting conditions.

HDR content looks impressive, and peak brightness of up to 1200 nits ensures the screen remains legible even in direct sunlight.

The one notable trade-off is refresh rate. While Apple's Pro models feature ProMotion technology with up to 120Hz, the 17e is capped at 60Hz. As a result, animations, scrolling, and gaming won't feel quite as fluid in comparison — a difference that users coming from higher-refresh-rate devices will likely notice.

That said, the display still delivers crisp visuals and strong contrast for everyday use. Overall, the iPhone 17e's screen offers premium image quality at an accessible price; the 60Hz ceiling is its only real concession.

Performance and Battery

Under the hood, the iPhone 17e is powered by Apple's latest A19 chip, built on advanced 3-nanometer technology. Featuring a 6-core CPU, a 4-core GPU, and Neural Accelerators, this is the same silicon found in the iPhone 17 — and it shows.

Everyday tasks like browsing, messaging, and streaming are effortlessly smooth, apps launch instantly, and multitasking is handled without a hitch. Even demanding workloads such as intensive gaming and video editing ran without any noticeable lag or stutter.

The A19 also excels at graphic rendering and handles AR applications with ease. In short, the iPhone 17e delivers flagship-grade speed and stability in a far more accessible package.

On the software side, the 17e ships with iOS 26, which brings a redesigned Liquid Glass aesthetic that makes apps and system experiences feel more expressive while keeping the interface instantly familiar. All Apple Intelligence features are supported, including Writing Tools, Priority Notifications, Image Playground, and ChatGPT integration via Siri. Visual Intelligence now lets you search across apps and ask questions about what's on your screen — handy for quickly pulling up information or adding events to your calendar.

Image Playground gains ChatGPT-powered styles for generating pictures, and Genmoji lets you create custom emoji from text descriptions. Cross-device Continuity features allow seamless transitions between iPhone, iPad, and Mac, while improved Siri intelligence and smarter app suggestions make the overall experience more intuitive.

Battery life is another strong suit. During our testing, the 17e comfortably lasted a full day of moderate use — covering browsing, messaging, video streaming, and light gaming.

Heavier workloads such as extended video recording or prolonged gaming do drain the battery faster, but the A19 chip's efficiency helps offset that to a reasonable degree. The phone supports MagSafe wireless charging for seamless integration with Apple's accessory ecosystem, and USB-C wired charging is also available, though charging speeds are modest compared to some rivals.

Camera

The iPhone 17e impresses on the camera front as well. Its single 48MP Fusion camera produces sharp, detailed images with excellent color accuracy.

Through computational photography, the lens also enables an optical-quality 2x Telephoto zoom, effectively giving users two cameras in one. You can shoot at the full 48MP resolution or stick with the 24MP default for more manageable file sizes. Portrait photography benefits from the same Focus and Depth Control tools found on Apple's full-priced iPhones, letting you adjust the depth of field both during and after a shot — turning ordinary photos into polished portraits.

In well-lit conditions, the iPhone 17e excels. Daytime shots are crisp, vibrant, and rich in detail. Low-light performance, however, reveals the limits of a single-lens setup — images in dim environments can appear somewhat grainy, lacking the multi-lens advantages and advanced Night Mode enhancements of Apple's Pro models. Video recording, on the other hand, is smooth and stable. On the front, an 18MP Center Stage camera offers a wide field of view and automatically adjusts framing to keep more people in view during group video calls.

Selfies and video calls both look clear, with accurate and natural skin tones.

Verdict

The iPhone 17e makes a compelling case as the best budget iPhone Apple has ever made. Starting at Rs 64,900, it packages the A19 chip, 256GB of storage, MagSafe, full Apple Intelligence support, and strong camera performance into a compact, well-crafted design. The 60Hz display and single rear camera are the obvious compromises, but they feel minor given everything else on offer. Whether you're upgrading from an older iPhone, switching from Android, or buying your very first Apple device, the iPhone 17e delivers the full iPhone experience at a price that may end up attracting a lot of buyers.
