Apple iPhone 18 Pro data leak: Tata Electronics breach exposes key components — What we know

A ransomware attack on Tata Electronics has left Apple’s sensitive supply chain data exposed on the dark web. The leaked files reportedly include detailed lists of components and suppliers, along with photographs of Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models.

According to Reuters, the information is said to have been taken from Tata Electronics’ systems and later published online by the group behind the attack.The exposure could impact Apple’s tightly managed global supply chain, where hundreds of suppliers come together to build iPhones. It may also put pressure on Apple’s relationship with Tata, which has emerged as a key manufacturing partner outside China. The leak could additionally offer rivals, counterfeiters and vendors rare insight into Apple’s supplier network.Tata Electronics, which both supplies parts and assembles iPhones, is a key part of Apple’s push to expand manufacturing outside China. This move also fits into India’s plan, supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to grow into a major electronics manufacturing hub.Apple is expected to launch its iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September. The leak comes as the company faces higher costs, after recently raising prices of iPads and MacBooks due to rising chip costs.

Analysts expect iPhone prices may also increase in the coming months.

Reuters reported that more than 200,000 files from Tata Electronics were posted on the dark web by a group called World Leaks. Those files reportedly included design documents for older iPhones and some Tesla parts, both linked to Tata clients. Documents linked to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW) and Qualcomm (QCOM.O), both key Apple suppliers, were also part of the leak.New documents reviewed by Reuters show that at least six files map parts of the iPhone 18 Pro models to specific suppliers. These include parts for the main circuit board, battery and camera systems.A source familiar with the matter said Apple treats this supplier information as highly sensitive, especially for unreleased products. The documents reportedly show supplier details that Apple does not publish publicly.Overall, the files cover hundreds of parts expected to be used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. They also show where Apple uses multiple suppliers for some parts and fewer suppliers for others, revealing both strengths and risks in its supply chain.World Leaks has previously claimed responsibility for a breach involving Nike. Reuters has not confirmed the authenticity of the data and could not reach the group for comment.
