The Indian archery duo of Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Rishabh Yadav secured India a Silver medal after narrowly missing out on the top prize against the Netherlands in a tightly contested Compound Mixed Team Final at the Archery World Championships in Gwangju on Sunday.
Following a heated contest, which saw the Indians lose their initial lead to the Netherlands’ Sanne De Laat and Mike Schloesser, the Dutch secured the Gold by a narrow margin of two points in a 157-155 win.
Rishabh paired with experienced star Jyothi, the top-ranked Indian compound woman who placed third with 707 points, to enable the fourth-slotted Indian mixed team to defeat Germany 160-152, El Salvador 157-153, and Chinese Taipei 157-155 and fix a final date with the Netherlands.
In the final, India started off strong, taking the slender 39-38 lead over their opponents at the conclusion of End 1.
But, the Netherlands’ archers would muster up their momentum to strike the bullseye and turn the tables on the Indians in End 2, taking the narrow 77-76 lead.
Having fallen behind, Jyothi and Rishabh couldn’t find the difference-making shot, as the Dutch kept their composure and went arrow-for-arrow, keeping a hold of their lead.
Netherlands’ ‘Mr Perfect’ Schloesser didn’t miss the 10-ring! All 8 arrows either scored 10 or X, to ensure they never fell behind again, as they narrowly defeated the Indians by two points at the end of the match.
A couple of 9s in End 2 proved to be costly in the final scoreline in an otherwise high-quality final.
India’s Results From Day 1
India assured itself of two medals on the opening day of the World Archery Championships in Gwangju, Korea, with strong performances from young compound archer Rishabh Yadav.
Rishabh, who scored 709 points to finish eighth in qualifying, teamed up with Aman Saini and Prathamesh Fuge to guide India’s men’s team past Australia, the USA, and Turkey, booking a final against France.
However, defending champion India, comprising Jyothi, Parneet Kaur, and Prithika Pradeep, faced humiliation against Italy in a 229-233 loss in the second round of the Compound Women’s Team event.
