Arvind Kejriwal Opposes E20 Petrol Rollout, Seeks PM’s Intervention

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal alleged E20 petrol reduces mileage and damages vehicles, urging the Centre to withdraw the policy. He said he will write to the PM Narendra Modi.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday criticised the Centre’s implementation of E20 (20% ethanol-blended) petrol, alleging that the government has imposed the fuel across the country without adequate testing and has effectively turned the country into a “laboratory" for an experiment.

Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal claimed that motorists across the country have complained of reduced mileage, engine damage and corrosion after using ethanol-blended petrol. He alleged that fuel efficiency has dropped by nearly 30%, increasing the financial burden on consumers.

Referring to proceedings before the Supreme Court, Kejriwal claimed that the Centre had initially described the E20 rollout as an experiment through the Attorney General but later denied making any such submission.

Sharing a video clip of the court proceedings, he said that if the policy was indeed experimental, it should first have been tested on a limited number of vehicles before being implemented nationwide.

“An experiment should first be conducted on a few hundred or a few thousand vehicles. Only after evaluating the results should it be expanded across the country," Kejriwal said.

The AAP leader questioned why every vehicle owner was being subjected to what he described as an untested policy and asked whether the government would compensate people if their vehicles suffered damage due to ethanol-blended fuel.

Kejriwal further alleged that ethanol-blended petrol was causing vehicles to deliver nearly 30% lower mileage. Citing what he described as remarks by a Bharat Petroleum executive, he claimed ethanol naturally offers lower fuel efficiency because of its chemical properties.

He argued that if mileage declines by around 30%, the price of ethanol-blended petrol should also be reduced proportionately.

“The government is charging the same price while people are getting significantly lower mileage, increasing their fuel expenses," he said.

The AAP chief also alleged that several vehicle owners have complained of engine damage, corrosion and deterioration of vehicle components due to E20 petrol. He questioned why the government continued with the rollout despite what he described as widespread public opposition.

Kejriwal announced that he would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming days, urging the Centre to withdraw the E20 petrol policy. He also invited citizens to share suggestions through comments and direct messages on what should be included in the letter.
