The new Pakistani opposition alliance, called the Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), has announced a countrywide protest campaign from August 5, demanding the resignation of the provincial government in Balochistan and the postponement of elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The protest campaign will be organised to mark three years since former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was convicted and incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led alliance has called a joint parliament session to discuss terrorism in Balochistan and PoK.
The demands were made at a news conference in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after a meeting of the opposition alliance chaired by TTAP president and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Mahmood Khan Achakzai.
What Are TTAP’s Demands?
The TTAP has cited lawlessness in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, the recent protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Army Chief Asim Munir’s failed policies in Pakistan.
Achakzai also lashed out against the government over the treatment of Imran Khan, describing it as a continued violation of the constitutional and fundamental rights of political prisoners. He said a “non-elected government" lacked the legitimacy to resolve Balochistan’s security challenges.
The opposition alliance demanded the immediate resignation of the Balochistan government and called for the release of Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and other political prisoners. It also demanded the postponement of the elections in PoK, saying the prevailing political environment was not conducive to holding polls.
Achakzai also hit out at the government over the recent attack on a security post in Balochistan’s Ziarat district, which killed 17 Pakistani cops, saying the police were ill-equipped to deal with the situation and no official had been held accountable for the attack.
Pakistan Facing Three-Front Internal War
Top intelligence sources told CNN-News18 that the military establishment in Pakistan was currently fighting a three-front internal war – an active insurgency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), violent attacks in Balochistan, and the political opposition.
By demanding joint parliamentary sessions to interrogate security chiefs and calling for the ouster of the Balochistan government, the opposition is using the Pakistan Army’s security failures against them, sources said.
Moreover, the political opposition in Pakistan is no longer just asking for power, but is actively fighting the Army’s aura of authority and its public legitimacy. It is also demanding the postponement of the July 27 PoK elections after protests erupted in the territory over basic rights, prompting a harsh crackdown.
