'Asli TMC' Faction Suspends Abhishek Banerjee, Appoints Arup Roy As Chairman

Ritabrata Banerjee's faction suspends Abhishek Banerjee, appoints Arup Roy chairman amid claims of a constitutional crisis in the party.

Uluberia Purba MLA Ritabrata Banerjee’s “real Trinamool" on Monday announced the suspension of Abhishek Banerjee, who was party’s second-in-command of the AITC while announcing the appointment of Arup Roy as chairman.

During a special meeting, the faction appointed Javed Khan, Biplab Kitra, Sandipan Saha and Ritabarata Banerjee as General Secretary.

This comes days after Mamata Banerjee-led TMC expelled Ritabrata for alleged anti-party activities.

According to Telegraph India, the Ritabrata camp held a meeting at a hotel in New Town, which was attended by 60 MLAs and 70 councillors of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. They claimed the meeting was held to address what it termed a “constitutional crisis" within the organisation.

“The organisational structure was not renewed after the expiry of its tenure. Therefore, it became necessary to initiate the process of reconstituting the party’s national leadership," Telegraph India reported a leader present at the meeting quoting Ritabrata Banerjee as saying.

In response, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh slammed the move and said in a post on X: “It is a comedy show. A man who has been expelled from the TMC is holding a special session. The matter is in the court and we believe justice will be done. We do not give any importance to such comical behavior. TMC = Mamata Banerjee. All else is a circus"
