Nazira constituency in Assam, located in Sivasagar district, is one of the 126 assembly seats in the state. The seat has historically been a Congress bastion but is now witnessing a sharp electoral contest this time with the BJP trying to make inroads.
Nazira Consituency Candidates
The Congress has fielded three-time MLA from Nazira Debabrata Saikia. He will face Mayur Borgohain of the BJP and Kanak Gogoi of the CPI.
Nazira Seat Electoral History
In the 2021 Assam Assembly election, Nazira witnessed a nail-biting contest, with Debabrata Saikia of the Indian National Congress (INC) winning 52,387 votes, securing around 47.5% vote share. The BJP candidate finished a close second with about 46.9% votes, and the margin of victory was just 683 votes, signalling a shift from a safe Congress seat to a competitive battleground. Saikia retained the seat in 2016 and 2011 elections.
In 2006, the seat saw a rare upset when Drupad Borgohain of the Communist Party of India (CPI) won the election with 37,623 votes. He defeated the Congress candidate by a narrow margin of just 510 votes, breaking the party’s long-standing hold over the constituency.
In 2001, Hemoprova Saikia of the INC secured a landslide victory with 44,170 votes and a commanding 68.19% vote share, highlighting the Congress party’s deep-rooted dominance in Nazira at the time.
Voting Pattern & Political Shift
Nazira has elected Congress candidates in 4 of the last 5 elections, underscoring its legacy as a Congress stronghold. However, the sharp narrowing of margins—especially in 2021—shows a clear rise of the BJP as a serious challenger.
The transition since 2016 reflects a broader political shift seen across Upper Assam, where the BJP has expanded rapidly into traditionally Congress-dominated areas.
Nazira’s Demography
Nazira’s electoral behaviour is shaped by a socially diverse yet regionally rooted population. The dominant community in the constituency is the Ahom community, which falls under the OBC category and plays a decisive role in voting patterns. Other important social groups include Brahmins, Kalitas, Koch, Deori, and tea tribe communities, all of whom contribute to the constituency’s complex social fabric.
In terms of religious composition, Nazira is a Hindu-majority constituency, with Hindus accounting for about 76.69% of the population, while Muslims make up approximately 22.23%. This demographic mix creates a political environment where both majority and minority considerations influence electoral strategies and coalition-building.
The tea tribe communities, whose ancestors were brought to Assam during the colonial period to work in tea plantations, also form a significant voting bloc in and around Nazira. Their socio-economic concerns and voting preferences often play an important role in determining election outcomes.
