Assault on YouTuber Shajan Scaria: four taken into custody

A special team of Thodupuzha police on Monday took into custody four persons from Bengaluru in connection with the attack on YouTuber Shajan Scaria.

According to Thodupuzha Station House Officer Mahesh Kumar, the prime accused Mathews Kollappally and three others were taken into custody from Bengaluru. The police will record their arrest on Monday night. “We need to identify one more accused,” said the official.

On Sunday, a case was registered against five unidentified persons on charge of assaulting and attempting to murder Mr. Scaria. According to the police, the incident occurred around 6.40 p.m. at Mangattukavala, near Thodupuzha, in Idukki, on Saturday.

As per the First Information Report (FIR), the accused blocked the vehicle in which Mr. Scaria was travelling, manhandled him, and attempted to murder him. The police said that after the attack, the accused escaped to Bengaluru on Saturday night. They were taken into custody after monitoring his movements through the cyber cell.

Mr. Scaria alleged that CPI(M) activists were behind the attack. “The gang tried to kill me. I had a narrowl escape,” he said.
