Chennai: Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday condoled the deaths of CPI veteran R Nallakannu, film director Bharathiraja, producers R B Choudary and K Rajan, and former Assembly secretary C K Ramaswamy.
A resolution moved in the House by Speaker J C D Prabhakar expressed condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families.
Nallakannu was a freedom fighter who was imprisoned during the freedom struggle. “He was hailed as the ‘Gandhi of Tamil Nadu’ and admired for leading a simple and honest life, like former minister P Kakkan,” the resolution said. It also noted that Nallakannu had dedicated his life to the welfare of farmers, labourers and marginalised sections, and was honoured with the state govt’s highest civilian award, the Thagaisal Tamizhar Award. The Assembly also made obituary references to former MLAs C Ramaswami, T Veeraswamy, C Swaminathan, H G Arumugam, P Kannan and A Nanjil Murugesan.
