Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing state visit to Indonesia is expected to result in several major strategic, defence and economic outcomes, with cooperation spanning missile systems, critical minerals, election technology and maritime infrastructure, according to sources.

PM Modi held bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on Tuesday, aimed at giving fresh momentum to the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri accompanied the Prime Minister during the meeting.

Sources told CNN-News18 that one of the biggest expected outcomes is Indonesia’s decision to import India’s indigenous Astra air-to-air missiles.

The move comes after the demonstrated success of India’s air-to-air missile capabilities during Operation Sindoor.

Sources also said Indonesia is set to expand its BrahMos missile inventory, with India expected to support Jakarta by supplying additional BrahMos missile batteries.

Defence cooperation has emerged as a key pillar of bilateral ties, with security relations having grown significantly in recent years through high-level exchanges, joint military exercises, defence industry collaboration and Indonesia’s acquisition of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

In another significant development, sources said India will support the development of Indonesia-specific Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

The move is being seen as a major endorsement of India’s election management model and reflects growing institutional cooperation between the two countries.

FOCUS ON CRITICAL MINERALS

India is also likely to invest in the manufacturing of steel, nickel and rare earth permanent magnets in Indonesia as both countries seek to strengthen critical mineral supply chains.

Critical minerals are expected to feature prominently during the bilateral discussions as Indonesia possesses around 21 per cent of the world’s nickel reserves and is among the leading producers of bauxite, copper and tin.

The cooperation is expected to support India’s long-term supply chain security and renewable energy transition goals.

Sources further said India and Indonesia will jointly develop Sabang Port, which overlooks the strategically important Strait of Malacca and is located around 100 miles from India’s Great Nicobar Port project.

The proposed cooperation is expected to further strengthen maritime connectivity and strategic coordination in the Indo-Pacific region.

Maritime cooperation remains one of the key focus areas of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, guided by India’s MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions) vision.

FIRST BILATERAL VISIT SINCE STRATEGIC TIES WERE ELEVATED

PM Modi arrived in Indonesia on the first leg of his three-nation tour covering Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.

He received a grand ceremonial welcome upon arrival, with Indonesian Air Force fighter jets escorting his aircraft as it entered the country’s airspace.

President Prabowo personally received the Prime Minister at the airport, where he was welcomed with a traditional cultural performance. Four Indonesian ministers were also present to welcome the Prime Minister, who was accorded a Guard of Honour.

This marks PM Modi’s first bilateral visit to Indonesia since India and Indonesia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.

Ahead of his departure, PM Modi had said his visit would further strengthen India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision and its commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

The Prime Minister said he and President Prabowo would hold discussions aimed at providing greater momentum to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across multiple sectors.

During his visit, PM Modi is also scheduled to visit the UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta along with President Prabowo and interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Indonesia.

Indonesia is India’s second-largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade reaching USD 24.78 billion during FY 2025-26.

Following the conclusion of his engagements in Indonesia, PM Modi will travel to Australia and New Zealand as part of his three-nation diplomatic tour.
