People visit the Snow Park at Balvatika Fun Carnival to beat the heat during the summer season, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat
Ahmedabad: Planning to step out for errands, commute during the afternoon rush, or spend hours on field duty? Wear loose cottons, hydrate frequently, and avoid direct exposure as much as possible because the weather gods are showing little mercy.
Ahmedabad remained Gujarat’s hottest on Wednesday, recording a blistering 43.7°C, which was 1.7 degrees above normal, according to the India meteorological department (IMD).The heatwave-like conditions are far from over. The weather office has forecast another punishing Thursday for the city, with temperatures likely to climb to 44°C under mainly clear skies. The searing afternoons, dry winds and sharp fall in humidity levels by evening are making outdoor conditions increasingly harsh.
“While morning humidity stood at 62%, it plunged to 18% by evening, creating hot and dehydrating conditions across the city. The minimum temperature was recorded at 28.3°C,” IMD said. With schools already shut for summer vacations and roads thinning out during peak afternoon hours, residents are increasingly shifting errands and outdoor activities to early mornings and late evenings. Weather officials said dry conditions are likely to persist across Gujarat over the coming week, with no significant relief expected immediately.
Even though the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala around May 26, according to IMD, Gujarat will continue to remain under dry weather conditions for now. Across the state, several inland cities continued to reel under temperatures above 40°C on Wednesday.
