Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s sisters – Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi – were stopped by police at the Gorkhpur checkpoint on Adiala Road on Tuesday while attempting to travel to Adiala Jail, where the former prime minister remains incarcerated. PTI workers accompanying them were also prevented from moving beyond the checkpoint, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement.
Speaking to the media at the site, Aleema Khan used the opportunity to sharply criticise the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), alleging that authorities had imposed severe restrictions on the movement of essential supplies and basic services.
Claiming that the region was facing an unprecedented blockade, Aleema said, “No food, internet, transport, medicines and other basic commodities are being allowed to enter Kashmir." She further alleged that “an attempt is being made to turn Kashmir into Karbala," invoking the historic symbol of suffering and sacrifice to describe what she called the hardships being faced by residents.
Her remarks come amid continuing protests in parts of PoK, where demonstrations over governance, economic issues and administrative measures have periodically led to confrontations between protesters and security forces.
Aleema praised the resilience of the people in the region, saying their determination would inspire the rest of the country. “These people are oppressing the Kashmiris, but the Kashmiris stand strong. The entire Pakistan will learn from the Kashmiris and follow in their footsteps," she said.
She also raised concerns over the condition of those detained during the protests, alleging that several prisoners had fallen seriously ill. “Many people are in prisons; their vehicles have been confiscated. People in prisons are dying after contracting hepatitis," she claimed, while urging authorities to address the situation.
Calling for greater public attention to the human cost of the unrest, Aleema appealed to Pakistanis to speak up for families affected by the crackdown. “These are the people who are making sacrifices. Talk about those who have left behind young children. Become their voice and speak about what impact this oppression has had on their homes," she said.
She further added, “They had stepped out for their rights, and their children have been orphaned. They are martyrs; talk about them."
Authorities have not publicly responded to Aleema Khan’s allegations regarding the blockade, prison conditions or the claims of widespread restrictions in PoK. Independent verification of the allegations was not immediately available.
