Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hit out at the Congress, accusing the party of capitulating to “conspiratorial forces" during attempts to separate the whole of Bengal from India under British rule. He also shed light on the history of violence in the state, which claimed the lives of several innocent Bengalis.

While addressing an event in Hooghly to mark the Paschim Banga Diwas (West Bengal Foundation Day), PM Modi emphasised the need for educating the younger generation about the significance of the occasion, particularly when there were attempts to make the entire Bengal a part of Pakistan.

“Bengal witnessed partition. It saw its motherland being divided. Yet Bengal did not allow its identity and heritage to be destroyed. As a result, when there were attempts to separate the whole of Bengal from India, those plans were thwarted through the creation of West Bengal," he said.

PM Modi said the West Bengal Foundation Day was not just about remembering a date, but about recalling an entire chapter of history.

“We need to repeatedly highlight the importance of West Bengal Foundation Day. The younger generation needs to know what was happening during that period. When efforts were being made to make the whole of Bengal a part of Pakistan, Congress had bowed before those conspiratorial forces. It was then that Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee raised his voice against it and declared that the whole of Bengal would not become a part of Pakistan," he added.

‘Bengal’s History Was Suppressed’

The Prime Minister further accused the Congress of suppressing the history of West Bengal and whitewashing history. He said the same spirit that helped save West Bengal needed to be carried forward after independence, but the opposite happened.

“Efforts were made to forget West Bengal Day and its spirit. History was whitewashed due to political agendas. The Congress, which wanted to abandon Bengal as an orphan at the time of partition, after partition began playing the game of appeasement even in the remaining West Bengal. The history of West Bengal was suppressed," he said.

PM Modi also alleged that Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s contributions were denied, and Bengal soon became a hub for infiltration under the Congress, Left and TMC governments.

“Large industries moved out of here. Small industries and businesses shut down. Employment opportunities for the youth kept shrinking. Resources were increasingly taken over by infiltrators," he alleged.

Modi further said promises made by people have now begun to be fulfilled after the formation of the new government. “Those who have looted the people will themselves come forward to return the money they took. Action has already begun against the major corrupt syndicates and individuals who exploited and looted the people of Bengal," he mentioned.

“The era of cut money has come to an end, and the process of accountability and reform has begun."

He further said Bengal has a very important role to play in the vision of Viksit Bharat.
