Australian TV channel reporter Danika Mason has apologised after a live cross from the Winter Olympics in Italy went viral for all the wrong reasons.
Mason appeared on Channel Nine’s breakfast programme Today on Wednesday, but viewers quickly noticed something was off.
With glazed eyes and slurred speech, she stumbled through her sports update, veering off-script to reference iguanas and coffee prices.
“Literally like the price of coffee over here is actually fine, it’s more the price of coffee in the US that we’re gonna have to get used to," she said, apparently responding to comments from the studio.
“I’m not sure about the iguanas. Where are we going with that one?"
She then mixed up the UK and the US while the hosts could be heard laughing in the background.
A day later, Mason fronted up.
“I want to take full responsibility, it’s not the standard I set myself," she said during another on-air appearance, admitting she had “misjudged the situation" by drinking before going live.
She also cited altitude, cold weather and not eating dinner as contributing factors, adding she was “embarrassed".
The clip spread rapidly across social media, drawing both criticism and support.
Mason began her career as an intern in the newsroom, first logging footage at the 2012 Olympic Games before moving into producing and later becoming a reporter.
This time, though, it was her own live Olympic moment that stole the headlines.
