Star Indian men’s singles shuttler Ayush Shetty on Wednesday stunned fifth-seed Li Shi Feng in straight games to move into the Round of 16 at the Badminton Asia Championships, providing a massive push to India’s chances at the continental showpiece.

This was the first meeting between Ayush and Li and one would have expected the latter, an Asian Games gold medallist, to have an upper hand.

But Ayush came out of the syllabus for Li and went on to bag the match 21-13, 21-16, not giving the latter any chance to fight for a spot in the next round.

Ayush hasn’t had a great outing in 2026 till now, with no quarterfinal, semifinal or runner-up finishes on the tour yet. But the big win over Li would give the youngster some much-needed confidence in the tournament.

Ayush will now take on Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu Jen, whom he hasn’t played before on the BWF Tour.

Earlier in the day, Malvika Bansod lost in straight games to Busanan Ongbamrungphan (21-10, 21-19). Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi are all set to take on the eighth seeds, the Chinese pair of Li Yi Jing and Luo Xu Min, in a women’s doubles encounter.

Lakshya Sen will take on Lee Cheuk Yiu, while Tanvi Sharma faces Karupathevan Letshanaa. Kidambi Srikanth is all set to meet eighth seed Loh Kean Yew, while HS Prannoy goes up against Nguyen Hai Dang.

Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra will face the Vietnamese duo of Thi Dieu Ly Pham and Thi Khanh Pham in the women’s doubles clash. Meanwhile, Unnati Hooda is all set to take on Supanida Katethong.

Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun will take on top seeds Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae in the men’s doubles clash. Meanwhile, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu is all set to face Wong Ling Ching.

Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam will face the Thai pair of Hathaithip Mijad and Napapakorn Tungkasatan in a women’s doubles clash.
