New Delhi: In some reports, it has been reported that YouTube has recently started to tighten restrictions on background playback on mobile by closing the loophole that many users had relied on for years. According to some sources, Google is currently blocking background playback on mobile browsers, limiting the feature to YouTube Premium subscribers. The changes affect the users who previously used third-party browsers such as Brave and others to access the background playback. The Background playback is one of the key features of the YouTube Premium, enabling videos to continue playing even when the browser is minimised or the phone’s screen is turned off.

Google has also confirmed that it is enforcing its rules more strictly. The background playback is meant only for YouTube Premium members. The company has stated and acknowledged that some non-Premium users were previously able to access the feature through any third-party browsers in certain situations, but it has noted that the experience has now been upgraded to keep things consistent across the platforms. The changes began appearing last week, starting with the Samsung Internet users. Soon after, the users of browsers such as Brave, Vivaldi, and Microsoft Edge also reported that the background playback was no longer working as before.

Videos now stop playing when users switch applications or lock their screens, unless they are signed in with a YouTube Premium account. Despite these tighter restrictions, the report also noted that some of the users are still finding workarounds. A few Firefox users have been reported to managed to keep background playback working by changing the browser’s user-agent string to Android VR, which makes YouTube treat the video as if it is playing in a different environment.
