All eyes are on April 25. That’s when the BWF council votes at its AGM during the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark, on whether to adopt the proposed 3×15 scoring system (with setting to 21).
If passed, badminton could look very different very soon.
The format has already been trialled at national tournaments, Grade 3 events, and the 2025 World Junior Championships. The BWF says the numbers back it: shorter matches, tighter finishes, better scheduling and improved player welfare.
But is this evolution or erosion?
What Changes With 3×15?
Currently, elite badminton follows the 3×21 rally-point system. The proposed shift to 3×15 trims each game by six points.
The BWF argues this format “provides the best balance of match excitement, competitive fairness, player welfare, and tournament presentation."
Translation? Matches get to crunch time quicker. Durations become more predictable. Broadcasters get tighter windows. Organisers squeeze in more matches. Players recover faster.
It’s a format designed for the modern sports economy: faster, sharper, more TV-friendly.
The Upside: Speed, Stamina and Sustainability
Shorter matches could genuinely help.
With packed calendars and mounting injury concerns, trimming match length may extend careers — especially for older players or those managing niggles. Less physical wear could mean higher overall quality across tournaments.
For fans, quicker games might mean fewer lulls and more high-pressure rallies. The “endgame" arrives faster. Every point carries weight earlier.
The Pitfalls: Is ‘Clutch’ Being Diluted?
Here’s the counter-argument.
Badminton has long been a test of endurance and nerve. In a 21-point game, players have room to recover from slow starts. Momentum shifts breathe. Tactical battles evolve.
In a 15-point sprint? There’s less margin for error.
A stray net cord. A lucky line clip. One poor service game. Titles could hinge on smaller sample sizes. Slow starters are suddenly in danger. The grind and slow burn to a nervy endgame risks being replaced by snap-smash-clap.
Critics argue this may prioritise quantity over quality, trimming match time instead of trimming the congested calendar itself.
So, Evolution or Shortcut?
The BWF insists it’s about “player welfare, sustainability and innovation." Sceptics see commercial streamlining dressed as reform.
If the vote passes, badminton gets snappier. But whether it stays as gripping over time, now that’s the real match point.
