Bam Adebayo set a new milestone with an incredible 83 points in the Miami Heat’s 150-129 victory over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday, marking the second-highest total in NBA history.

Adebayo’s phenomenal performance surpassed Kobe Bryant‘s 81 points for the Los Angeles Lakers against Toronto in 2006, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain’s iconic 100 points against the New York Knicks in 1962.

The stage was set for Adebayo’s historic night right from the start, with a scintillating first quarter that saw him score 31 points from 10-of-16 shooting. By half-time, he had already amassed 43 points, and he continued to dominate with an additional 19 points in the third quarter, bringing his total to 62.

The question then became whether Adebayo could surpass Bryant’s 20-year-old record of 81 points. Late in the fourth quarter, Adebayo achieved this feat, first drawing level with two free throws and then surpassing it with two more, reaching 83 points with just over a minute remaining.

Adebayo was substituted out to a standing ovation from an astonished home crowd at Miami’s Kaseya Center.

“Man, I wish I could relive it twice," Adebayo remarked, crediting his family, fans, and teammates for their support in his individual triumph. “Somebody had to pass me the ball. I appreciate coach for drawing up plays for me and I got it going tonight."

Reflecting on his career’s pinnacle, Adebayo said he sensed a historic performance was imminent after his first-half display. “This is number one, for sure," he stated.

Surpassing his childhood idol Bryant’s 81 points brought special satisfaction to Adebayo. “It’s Wilt, me and then Kobe — that sounds crazy," he noted, contemplating how Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash in 2020, might have reacted. “To me it’s wondering what he would say. My mind is like ‘What would he say to me?’ Because I’ve always wanted to have a conversation with him. He’d probably say ‘Do it again’. Just a surreal moment being in the company of somebody you idolised growing up."

Miami coach Erik Spoelstra described Adebayo’s performance as “just an absolutely surreal night." “We’ve been blessed to have been a part of a lot of big moments in this arena, and this one, it just happened," Spoelstra commented. “I’m grateful that we were all able to witness it."

Initially, Miami intended to stick to their game plan during Adebayo’s 43-point first half but gradually shifted to support his chase for history. “At half-time we talked about continuing to play our game," Spoelstra said. “In the second half I was a little bit more intentional trying to get him some touches. I would say once he got to 50, then we’re thinking, all right, let’s maybe get to 60. Then when he got to 60, just keep going. Might as well go for 70."

“I didn’t even dare think about taking him out of the game at that point. We just kept going. I wanted him to have a moment with the crowd to really enjoy this historic night in front of all the fans. So I didn’t stop until he got to Kobe’s (record)."

While Adebayo, 28, is primarily known for his defensive prowess rather than scoring, Spoelstra credited his performance to hard work. “Look at the company he’s with right now — the absolute greats of the game," Spoelstra noted. “It’s an absolute credit to his relentless will and work ethic. He’s willed himself and worked himself into being a premier offensive talent in this league."
