BC organisations renew demand for 42% reservation in MPTC, ZPTC polls

Fourteen Backward Classes (BC) welfare organisations have urged the Telangana government not to proceed with Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections until 42% reservation for BCs is implemented. These associations warned that the government would face serious consequences if it attempts to conduct the polls without ensuring enhanced quota.

The BC Associations convened a meeting on Sunday at BC Bhavan, chaired by National BC Welfare Association working president Ryaga Arun Kumar.

Addressing the gathering, several leaders, including Backward Communities Joint Action Committee (JAC) chairman and Rajya Sabha member R. Krishnaiah, said BC groups would continue their agitation until the State government enforces the increased reservation and holds elections accordingly. He noted that BC organisations had earlier allowed the conduct of Gram Panchayat and municipal elections considering different factors.

Mr. Krishnaiah said the State stands a strong chance of securing a favourable verdict in the High Court, asserting that GO No. 9 which deals with reservation for BCs was framed in accordance with constitutional provisions. “Under Article 243(D)(6), the State government has the authority to finalise reservations,” he said, reiterating that the GO was backed by detailed analysis and justified grounds.

The leaders further demanded that the government appoint senior and experienced legal experts to argue the case in the Supreme Court to ensure the enforcement of 42% BC reservation in local body elections.
