West Bengal Election 2026: The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election results have delivered a seismic shift in the state’s political landscape. For the first time in history, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a landslide victory, winning 207 seats in the 294-member assembly. The incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC) was decimated to just 80 seats, a dramatic reversal of fortune that saw even Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lose her long-held bastion of Bhabanipur.
While the “Lotus" wave swept the majority of the state, a distinct picture emerged in the remaining six seats, which were won by candidates from the Left, Congress, and regional parties. All these candidates belong to the Muslim community, which forms around 30% of the state’s population.
Humayun Kabir, the former TMC MLA who launched the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), won two seats in Murshidabad. Kabir, who made national headlines before the polls for his controversial plan to build a “Babri Masjid" replica in Murshidabad’s Beldanga, successfully leveraged local support to bypass the bipolar TMC-BJP contest.
Kabir secured a triumphant victory with a massive margin of 58,876 votes in Rejinagar. He also clinched the seat by nearly 27,943 votes, defeating his BJP rivals in Nowda.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) finally broke its “zero" streak from the 2021 elections. Mostafijur Rahaman (also known as Rana) reclaimed the Domkal seat—a traditional Left stronghold—defeating TMC’s Humayun Kabir (a former IPS officer of the same name) by a margin of 16,296 votes.
Meanwhile, Md. Nawsad Siddique, leader of the Indian Secular Front (ISF), maintained his influence in the South 24 Parganas. He retained the Bhangar seat, defeating TMC’s Saokat Molla by over 32,000 votes.
The Indian National Congress also opened its account in West Bengal after drawing a blank in the previous assembly. The party secured two seats in Murshidabad. Congress candidate Motab Shaikh won the Farakka seat by a margin of 8,193 votes, and Julfikar Ali emerged victorious in a closely contested battle in Raninagar.
The only seat where a result remains pending is Falta. The Election Commission of India (ECI) withheld the count and ordered a full repoll in all 285 polling stations following allegations of “severe electoral offences."
The BJP had formally complained that its party symbol (the Lotus) on EVMs was covered with adhesive tape in multiple booths. Additionally, reports surfaced of buttons being marked with ink or substances like attar to identify voter choices. Repolling in Falta is scheduled for May 21, 2026, with the final results for this seat expected on May 24.
