India’s push to modernise long distance rail travel is gathering pace, even as passengers wait for the rollout of the Vande Bharat sleeper service. The new overnight trains are expected to reshape intercity travel with higher speeds and improved comfort.

While anticipation remains high across the country, recent updates shed light on production timelines, testing procedures and future expansion plans.

Two additional Vande Bharat sleeper rakes are expected to be ready by March 2026. These trains are being manufactured by Bengaluru based public sector undertaking Bharat Earth Movers Ltd.

Under the original agreement with the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, BEML was tasked with delivering 10 sleeper rakes, each consisting of 16 coaches, by March 31, 2026. Officials have indicated that this deadline is unlikely to be met.

According to the revised schedule, the third and fourth rakes are expected before the end of March. After that, the plan is to roll out one rake every month. The tentative deadline for completing the first batch of 10 rakes has now been pushed to August 2026.

Testing and Safety Approval Process

Railway officials stress that the trains will not be rushed into service. Once delivered, each rake must undergo rigorous field trials, technical inspections and safety checks. Final approvals are required before the trains can be cleared for commercial operations.

Future Expansion Plans

To meet growing demand, especially from fast growing states such as Karnataka, the Railway Ministry has announced plans to manufacture 260 additional Vande Bharat sleeper rakes.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has stated that the project is being implemented in phases, beginning with prototype development and trials before moving to large scale production involving BEML, ICF and technology partners.

In addition, ICF Chennai plans to independently manufacture 50 sleeper rakes. These will differ from standard sets by featuring 24 coaches and pantry cars, making them more suitable for long distance travel.

What Passengers Can Expect

The Vande Bharat sleeper trains are designed to transform overnight rail journeys by offering a semi high speed alternative capable of operating at speeds up to 160 kmph. With modern interiors, improved safety features and enhanced passenger comfort, the service aims to provide a smoother and more reliable travel experience.

As production gathers momentum and testing continues, the upcoming rakes are expected to help Indian Railways maintain a steady rollout once the service is officially launched.
