A late-night return home in Bengaluru nearly turned into a frightening ordeal when a four year old child was accidentally left behind in a cab. Quick thinking by the mother and the swift response of city police ensured the boy was located and reunited with his family within an hour.
The incident occurred on Saturday night, February 14, 2026, under the jurisdiction of Hennur police station. A family residing in Ponnappa Layout had hired a cab to return home after visiting the ISKCON Temple.
During the journey, four-year old Jian Chungi fell fast asleep in the back seat. When the cab reached their apartment complex, his mother Ginny and five other relatives hurriedly got down from the vehicle. In the rush of unloading belongings and entering the house, they failed to notice that the child was still asleep inside.
Driver unaware, continues his trips
Unaware that a child remained in the car, cab driver Kiran drove away and continued his routine work. He reportedly completed two more pick-ups and drop offs while the boy remained asleep in the rear seat.
Within minutes of entering the house, Ginny realised her son was missing and remembered he had been in the cab. When attempts to reach the driver through the aggregator’s call centre failed, she immediately dialled Namma 112, the state emergency response helpline.
Police trace vehicle using CCTV and tracking system
The alert was relayed to Hoysala 51 patrol unit, where ASI Manjappa Koppal and Head Constable Satish Kumar were on duty. The officers reached the apartment within two minutes and began scanning CCTV footage to identify the cab’s registration number.
Using the Mobile Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System app, police traced the vehicle owner’s details and contacted the driver. When he checked the vehicle, he was shocked to find the child still sleeping.
Safe reunion within an hour
Police instructed the driver to return immediately and monitored the cab’s movement in real time. Within an hour of the initial report, the boy was safely handed over to his anxious parents.
Officers later counselled the family and advised them to remain vigilant while travelling with children. The rapid coordination between the emergency helpline and patrol officers ensured that what could have become a tragedy ended in relief for the family.
