Bengaluru’s steady growth as a global tech and business hub is once again pushing its infrastructure to evolve. With passenger traffic rising year after year, the focus has now shifted to expanding the city’s aviation capacity. In a key development following a meeting in Delhi, the Centre has given Karnataka the go-ahead to independently finalise the location for Bengaluru’s second international airport.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed the development to media, stating that the state now has the authority to identify and finalise the site for the new airport. He also said that the project is being planned with a clear timeline in mind, with the aim of making the second airport operational by 2033, when Kempegowda International Airport completes 25 years of service.
Why a Second Airport Is Being Planned
Kempegowda International Airport has handled Bengaluru’s growing air traffic efficiently over the years, but projections suggest it will approach capacity limits in the coming decade. With passenger numbers expected to rise sharply, the second airport is being positioned as a long-term solution to handle future demand and ensure smoother connectivity.
The plan is not just about adding capacity, but also about preparing the city for sustained economic growth and global movement of people and goods.
Shortlisted Locations Under Review
The state government has already identified three potential locations for the new airport. However, the final site has not yet been disclosed, as it will depend on guidelines set by the Union government.
Officials are assessing multiple factors before deciding, including accessibility, land availability, connectivity, and technical feasibility. The aim is to choose a location that can serve a wider population while supporting modern aviation infrastructure.
Challenges Around Height Restrictions
One of the key issues discussed during the meeting with centre was related to building height restrictions around airport zones. Current rules limit how tall structures can be in the vicinity of airports, which has implications for urban development projects in Bengaluru.
Projects like the proposed 250-metre Skydeck have come into focus in this context. The Centre is now reviewing these restrictions in comparison with international standards, raising the possibility of more flexible norms in the future without compromising aviation safety.
A Push Toward Decentralised Growth
The second airport is also being seen as a way to redistribute growth across the city. By placing a major infrastructure project in a new corridor, the government aims to boost development in outer areas and reduce pressure on central Bengaluru.
Industries, housing, and commercial activity are expected to follow such a large project, potentially easing congestion in existing urban zones.
What Lies Ahead
Industries Minister M.B. Patil is expected to oversee the construction phase of the project. In the coming months, the focus will be on finalising the location, land acquisition, and detailed planning.
As Bengaluru prepares for its next phase of expansion, the second international airport is emerging as a key piece of infrastructure that could shape how the city grows and connects with the world in the years ahead.
