Daily commuters of Namma Metro in Bengaluru have been tracking the expansion developments very closely. Especially in corridors where road traffic continues to stretch travel times, people are keen to know where the project stands now.
As the city waits for better north south connectivity, one of Namma Metro’s most anticipated lines is now entering a crucial phase of testing. “Finally, they have reached this stage, I am waiting to board the pink train so that I can save a good 2 to 3 hours on the traffic" says Sahil Raj, a resident of Tavarekere.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited is preparing to begin trial runs on the Pink Line, which runs from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara. Testing is expected to start by the end of March 2026, marking a key step toward making the corridor operational.
Trial Runs to Begin on Elevated Stretch
The first phase of testing will take place on the elevated section between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere. This stretch has been prioritised because elevated tracks require fewer regulatory clearances compared to underground sections.
The focus during this phase will be on checking track strength, train movement, signalling systems, and overall coordination between mechanical and electrical components. For commuters in south Bengaluru, this is an early sign that visible progress on the line is nearing completion.
Underground Work in Final Stages
While trials begin on the elevated portion, the underground section from Dairy Circle to Nagawara is still being readied. This stretch forms the core of the corridor, passing through some of the busiest parts of the city.
BMRCL Officials have indicated that track laying and third rail electrification inside the tunnels are progressing at a steady pace. Once completed and certified for safety, the underground and elevated sections will be integrated into a single operational line.
The Pink Line spans a total of 21.3 km, with 13.8 km underground and 7.5 km elevated. It is designed to connect key residential and commercial zones across north and south Bengaluru, offering an alternative to heavily congested roads.
Two major interchange stations are planned at MG Road, linking to the Purple Line, and Jayadeva Hospital, connecting to the Yellow Line. This will allow commuters to switch lines easily and reduce dependence on road-based travel, especially for those heading towards Electronic City or the central business district.
What Changes Once Operations Begin
The start of trial runs suggests that civil and systems work on the elevated stretch is largely complete. Once fully operational, the Pink Line is expected to significantly cut travel time between Bannerghatta Road and north Bengaluru.
For now, full commercial operations are targeted by the end of 2026 or early 2027, depending on safety approvals. Until then, the upcoming trial phase will be closely watched as a key indicator of how soon this long-awaited metro link becomes a reality.
