An IT professional in Bengaluru has alleged he was duped of Rs 55 lakh in a cryptocurrency fraud by a person whom he began talking to on a matrimonial website.
According to a report with NDTV, the 32-year-old filed a complaint with the local police, alleging that fraudsters approached him through a matrimonial website.
The First Information Report (FIR) in the case mentioned that the man was contacted by a woman on the matrimonial website, as she displayed interest in a marriage alliance.
Soon, they both started conversing through WhatsApp, the report claimed.
Within days, the woman steered the conversation towards cryptocurrency trading and convinced the man to invest money in an online investment platform.
She even shared links to fake trading websites, showing fake profits, thus promising high returns.
According to the report, the man initially transferred Rs 1 lakh for the investment. Later, upon being shown false profits in an online wallet, he was persuaded to invest more, gradually ending up in transferring a total of Rs 55.64 lakh in multiple transactions.
As he attempted to withdraw the supposed profits, he was asked to pay additional charges.
The man approached the police as the woman stopped responding to him.
A case in this regard was registered under sections related to cheating and cyber fraud, the report claimed.
On August 4, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Bangalore City Police Department and the Cyber Crime Police Station busted a large cybercrime network that was providing fake online legal services to citizens who were victims of cyber fraud.
The operation was launched on February 12, 2025, at the Ramamurthy Nagar Police Station based on a complaint lodged through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
In the complaint, it was alleged that the complainant was cheated of Rs 1.5 crore by being lured into installing a solar plant.
