Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Thursday launched Bharat Taxi, a new ride-hailing platform designed on a cooperative model that aims to offer a fairer and driver-centric model to compete with Uber, Ola and Rapido.

While Ola and Uber function as private, venture-backed gig economy platforms, the launch of Bharat Taxi is based on a cooperative model where the drivers, called Sarathis, are members and co-owners of the cooperative.

What Is Special About Bharat Taxi?

Bharat Taxi is a driver-owned cooperative which does not have any per-ride commissions, instead they pay a fixed daily access fee (around Rs 30) to use the app. This is intended to let drivers keep a far larger share of the fare. This is contrast with Uber and Ola where drivers are dependent on commissions.

One of the central promises of Bharat Taxi is higher earnings for drivers. This is to be ensured through a zero-commission model as drivers do not give a share of fare revenue to the platform on a per-ride basis. They only pay the daily fee. Apart from this, as cooperative members, drivers can participate in profit distribution and governance.

Does It Offer Lower Prices Than Uber, Ola?

Bharat Taxi promises a surge-free pricing, aiming to avoid price spikes during peak hours, unlike its private competitors. This also means that cab fares remain stable even during high demand or rain.

In platforms like Uber and Ola, fares vary based on real-time demand and availability of drivers, which leads to surge pricing. Prices shown to consumers often include additional factors (airport fees, tolls), sometimes making total trip costs significantly higher.

Does Bharat Taxi offer lower fares than Uber and Ola? News18 compared the prices of a fare from Noida Sector-98 to Patparganj. Here’s what we found:

  • While Bharat Taxi offers surge-free pricing, its bike fares remained higher than that of Uber and Ola at 6:49 am, when there is high traffic.
  • Cab fares varied very little, although Uber prices were slightly lower than the fares offered by Bharat Taxi. Ola fares remained higher than both.
  • Sedan fares offered by Bharat Taxi remained higher than that offered by Uber, although Ola fares were higher than Bharat Taxi.
  • The fares of priority cabs in Bharat Taxi were slightly lower than Ola and Uber.

We also checked the Bharat Taxi fares to check whether it actually offers surge-free pricing. Here is a comparison of fares at 4:09 pm and 6:49 pm from Noida Sector-98 to Patparganj, Delhi.

  • The bike fares of Bharat Taxi jumped from Rs 140 to Rs 207.
  • The cab (economy fares) went up from Rs 382 to Rs 440.
  • Sedan fares increased from Rs 440 to Rs 511.
  • Cab (priority) rates went up from Rs 411 to Rs 476.

After its launch in Delhi and the National Capital Region on Thursday, the service is expected to expand across other states and cities over the next two years. By formalising a cooperative, ownership-focused alternative, Bharat Taxi could introduce new competitive pressure on established players and reshape how gig economy platforms operate in India.
