In a major setback to the Congress ahead of the Assam Assembly polls, former state unit chief Bhupen Kumar Borah has resigned, citing concerns over party functioning and raising serious questions about allegations involving APCC President Gaurav Gogoi.

According to sources, Borah sent his resignation letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and also wrote to Rahul Gandhi. In the letter, Borah referred to what he described as the damaging impact of allegations levelled by the BJP against Gogoi over visits to Pakistan.

“Moreover, the gravest injury has arisen from the serious allegations levelled by the BJP against APCC President Gaurav Gogoi regarding his visits to Pakistan," Borah wrote. He added, “I had urged that he address the matter forthrightly and dispel any doubts. Instead, the hesitation and equivocation have only deepened public misgivings."

Borah further stated, “The image of the Congress party stands gravely impaired… following Shri Gaurav Gogoi’s failure to offer a clear and unequivocal response to the serious allegations concerning alleged links with Pakistan." He also questioned internal party dynamics, asking “why I appear to have been subjected to marginalisation at the hands of Sri Gaurav Gogoi and Sri Rakibul Hussain."

Sources said Borah blamed what he termed “highhandedness" by Gogoi for his decision to step down. In his communication to the high command, Borah reportedly said he was being ignored within the state unit and that the functioning of the party had affected his self-esteem and dignity.

Speaking after submitting his resignation, Borah said, “I sent my resignation to the Congress High Command at 8 am this morning and explained in detail why I was compelled to take this stand. This is not a personal decision. I have given 32 years to the party and joined it in 1994. This principle is not merely personal; it is driven by concern for the party’s future. That is why I conveyed everything in detail to the Congress High Command."

The development comes just days before Priyanka Gandhi’s scheduled visit to Assam and is seen as a significant blow to the party’s preparations ahead of the upcoming elections.
