India and the United States are expected to deepen cooperation on nuclear energy during US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s upcoming visit to India, following a strong signal from Washington’s top envoy in New Delhi ahead of the trip.
US Ambassador Sergio Gor hinted at major developments in bilateral nuclear cooperation, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “Big things ahead in India-US collaboration on Nuclear energy!"
Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit India from May 23 to 26 in his first official trip to the country since assuming office. The four-day visit will take him to Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi, combining high-level strategic engagements with cultural outreach.
However, the visit comes at a particularly delicate geopolitical moment. The United States remains deeply engaged in the escalating conflict with Iran, global crude oil markets continue to face volatility and India-US trade negotiations are entering a critical phase. Against that backdrop, energy security is expected to emerge as one of the central themes of Marco Rubio’s discussions with Indian leaders.
Marco Rubio’s visit is also expected to cover a broader basket of strategic issues, including defence cooperation, maritime security, critical technologies and supply-chain resilience. Talks are likely to include discussions around the Quad grouping, defence interoperability and regional coordination amid rising geopolitical uncertainty in the Indo-Pacific.
Trade negotiations are expected to feature prominently as well. India and the US have been working to ease tariff disputes and expand bilateral economic cooperation after years of friction over market access and trade barriers.
The visit will culminate in the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on May 26, where India, the US, Japan and Australia are expected to discuss Indo-Pacific security, maritime stability and regional coordination. With tensions in West Asia affecting global trade routes and energy flows, this year’s Quad meeting is expected to carry added geopolitical significance.
