Navi Mumbai: A 22-year-old college student riding his bike to reach his residence in Ashtami Koliwada, a traditional fishing residential locality in Roha taluka, was killed in a head-on collision with a dumper on the Nagothane-Roha road stretch in Raigad on Saturday at around 10.15 pm.The deceased, Raj Ganesh Patang, sustained grievous head injuries and was declared brought dead at Roha sub-district hospital, police informed.The dumper driver fled the accident spot and was later identified as Pankaj Arun Mistry (29), a resident of Patansai village in Roha taluka, after his identity was revealed by the dumper owner, whom the police contacted.An FIR was registered against Mistry under BNS sections for the offence of rash or negligent driving in a manner that endangers human life or is likely to cause hurt or injury, and act endangering life or personal safety of others through rash and negligent behaviour.
The police invoked Motor Vehicle Act sections for escaping without providing medical assistant to the injured biker and dangerous driving.Maruti Patil, senior police inspector of Roha, said, “The fatal accident occured about 100 metres ahead of Nayara petrol pump on the Nagothane-Roha road. The biker was heading towards Roha, when the dumper, loaded with industrial waste, coming from opposite direction collided head-on with the bike.
As the biker was riding helmetless, his head banged on the dumper’s front and he sustained grievous skull injuries causing his death instantly.
His bike was badly mangled in the accident. Even the dumper driver lost control over the wheels, yanked off road and toppled sideways. The driver had sustained minor bruises, but he fled from the accident spot. The dumper owner will be producing the accused driver Patange at Roha police station on Monday.
As per the provision of the law, Mistry will be served a notice under Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) directing him to co-operate in police probe and court trial.“SPI Patil said, “Roha police has been creating awareness among citizens using banners for insisting on riding bikes by wearing a helmet for their personal safety. Even penal action is taken on bikers riding helmetless and in past 15 days around Rs 2.50 lakh penalty has been imposed on helmetless bike riding, especially on the arterial roads. Still, several bikers continue to violate traffic rules thus risking their own life.
