Mumbai: The deputy chairperson of the legislative council will be elected during the three-week monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature. The election process will begin after the results of the MLC polls, held on June 18, are notified.
Shiv Sena functionaries said the post is likely to once again go to the incumbent, Neelam Gorhe, who was re-elected as MLC from the party. Since the post of the deputy speaker of the assembly is with NCP, the deputy chairperson of the council is expected to go to Sena and Gorhe’s name is said to have been finalised. Sena functionaries said since she is the incumbent and an experienced member, she is the preferred candidate. Gorhe is in her fifth MLC term since her first election in 2002. She is known for her work in shaping state laws to protect women. As deputy chairperson, she has been praised for her strong discipline and procedural command during tense govt debates.
