A Rapido bike taxi rider has been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a young woman passenger during a trip in Bengaluru. The accused has been identified as Mohammed Khaja, who was working with the app-based bike taxi platform.

Police said the incident took place after the woman booked a Rapido ride from BTM Layout to Indiranagar. During the trip, the driver allegedly acted inappropriately and touched her in an objectionable manner several times.

As the journey continued, the woman is said to have become increasingly uncomfortable and confronted the driver about his behaviour. Despite her objections, he allegedly persisted, leading her to act immediately once she reached her destination.

Soon after, she went to the Indiranagar police station and lodged a formal complaint describing the alleged harassment. Acting on her complaint, the police registered a case and initiated a search to locate the accused.

Using the details provided by the victim along with data from the Rapido platform, officers were able to identify and track down the bike rider, who was subsequently arrested.

According to officials, a case has been filed under sections related to sexual harassment. The investigators launched a probe into the case and were also trying to find out whether he had been involved in similar offences earlier.

The incident has once again sparked concerns about passenger safety, especially for women using app-based bike taxi services. Authorities have urged riders to stay alert and promptly report any inappropriate conduct during trips.

Police have also called on service providers to tighten background checks on drivers and adopt stronger safety protocols, including real-time tracking and robust emergency response mechanisms.

Officials have further emphasised that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of such crimes and assured that the survivor will receive all necessary assistance throughout the legal proceedings.

The case underscores the need for accountability and vigilance to ensure safe public transport options in urban centres like Bengaluru.
