The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have recorded a sweeping victory in Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) reserved constituencies in the recently concluded assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal, marking a strong consolidation of support in key social segments.

In Assam, the BJP and its alliance partners under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) showed near-total dominance in reserved seats. Out of nine SC-reserved constituencies, the BJP won five seats, while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured three. The Congress managed to win only one seat.

In the 18 ST-reserved constituencies in the state, the NDA achieved a clean sweep. The BJP won 13 seats, while its ally Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) secured five. A tribal candidate of another NDA partner, AGP, also won one general seat.

According to political observers, this reflects a strong consolidation of tribal and Scheduled Caste voters towards the BJP-led alliance.

Sources said delimitation changes also played a role in shaping the outcome, increasing the number of indigenous and tribal-reserved constituencies. Strong mobilisation through regional allies, along with BJP’s growing influence in Upper Assam and hill areas, further strengthened its position.

“This outcome indicates that the BJP not only expanded its electoral base but also achieved deep penetration among historically marginalised social groups, converting reserved constituencies into a strong pillar of its overall electoral dominance in the state," a source said.

In West Bengal, the 2026 assembly results showed an even sharper shift. Out of 68 SC-reserved seats, the BJP won 51, leaving only 17 for the Trinamool Congress (TMC). In ST-reserved constituencies, the BJP swept all 16 seats, signalling a uniform mandate across tribal regions such as North Bengal and Junglemahal.

Overall, the BJP secured 67 of 84 SC/ST seats across Assam and West Bengal, while the TMC was reduced to 17, with other parties wiped out in these segments. Analysts said this marks a decisive realignment in reserved constituencies.

In Tamil Nadu, NDA ally AIADMK won nine of 46 SC seats and one of two ST seats. In Puducherry, NDA partner AINRC secured two of five SC-reserved constituencies.
