A confrontation between a sitting judge and a local ruling party functionary spiralled into arrests, demolition action and a boycott call by lawyers in Madhya Pradesh after a BJP leader was accused of misbehaving with a judicial officer in public. The controversy began when District and Additional Sessions Judge Prasanna Singh Bahrawat filed a first information report (FIR), alleging that BJP leader Pankaj Gharu and his associates obstructed and abused him while he was on his way to court.

According to the complaint, a Scorpio SUV allegedly belonging to the accused was parked in the middle of the road, blocking traffic. When the judge requested that the vehicle be moved, the accused allegedly shouted at him, prevented him from opening his car door and stopped him from taking a photograph of the vehicle, which he described as illegally parked.

Within 24 hours of the FIR, police arrested Pankaj Gharu, who is a state executive member of the BJP Scheduled Castes Morcha. Police confirmed that a case has been registered and that the investigation is ongoing.

“One accused has been arrested. Search operations for the remaining accused are continuing," he said.

However, the matter escalated beyond the criminal case as district authorities carried out a demolition drive targeting structures allegedly linked to Pankaj Gharu. These included a poultry farm said to have been built on government land along the Maxi Bypass and alleged encroachments near his residence.

Tehsildar Sapna Sharma said the action followed due process.

“Multiple notices had previously been issued, but the encroachments were never removed. The structures were illegal and built on government land," she said.
