West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged on Sunday (April 12, 2026) that the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre wants to carry out a delimitation exercise to trifurcate Bengal and change the demographic and geographical composition of the province.

“Through delimitation, they might merge some districts of Bengal with Bihar and Odisha. People will face even more suffering. Our government will not allow the formation of detention camps,” Ms. Banerjee said during a public rally for the upcoming Assembly elections at Chhatna in Bankura. She said the delimitation bill is imminent, which the Central Government will use to divide the State into three parts. She added that the people of Bengal are likely to face major hardships if the BJP is voted to power.
