Former Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei had access to an extensive underground bunker complex in central Tehran, complete with escape tunnels and a blast-resistant shelter, according to a report published by Iran International on Thursday.
The report, citing architectural plans obtained from an informed source, said a separate security source had independently confirmed the authenticity of the documents. The facility, known as the Habib Ebrahimi complex, was located adjacent to Khamenei’s official residence in Tehran.
Built With Khamenei’s Approval
Iran International reported that construction of the complex began in 2009 after Khamenei approved the project. It was allegedly financed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) Khatam al-Anbiya Construction Headquarters.
The architectural plans suggest the site was designed with security and emergency evacuation in mind. Its main entrance was said to be large enough for vehicles to enter and descend nearly 30 metres underground.
Network Of Escape Tunnels
The complex is believed to have included a 27-metre tunnel connected to multiple escape routes. Another passage allegedly led to a parking garage near Enghelab Square.
Images reviewed by Iran International also purportedly show a five-storey underground office building used by senior officials attached to the Supreme Leader’s Office. Sources familiar with the project, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the publication that the facility was concealed beneath a sports centre.
Blast-Proof Shelter And Underground Facilities
The underground complex reportedly housed a three-level parking garage, firing ranges and two shelters situated approximately 30 and 35 metres below the surface.
One of the shelters is said to have contained a blast-resistant room intended to shield Khamenei from missile attacks.
Israeli Strike On The Complex
According to Iran International, the bunker was targeted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in early March after intelligence gathered by Units 8200 and 9900 helped identify its location.
At the time, the IDF said nearly 50 aircraft struck the underground site, which spanned several blocks in central Tehran, using more than 100 munitions.
The publication further claimed that Khamenei was not inside the bunker during the Israeli operation. Instead, he was allegedly at another command facility when he was killed by the IDF during the opening phase of Operation Roaring Lion.
