Brain-dead 12-year-old boy saves 5 lives in Erode

ERODE: A 12-year-old boy from Erode gave a new lease of life to five people after his parents consented to donate his organs following his declaration as brain dead.P. Mouleesh (12), son of Prabhu from Karungalpalayam in Erode, suffered from seizures and received treatment at various hospitals before being admitted to a private multi-speciality hospital for further care on 3 March.When he arrived at the hospital, the boy was unconscious, and his Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was recorded as 3/15. “Neurology and neurosurgery specialists examined him and confirmed that he had suffered brain death on the morning of 6 March,” said Dr C. Senthilvel, Managing Director of Senthil Multi-Speciality Hospital. He added that the boy’s condition was clearly explained to his parents.In a courageous decision amid grief, his parents agreed to donate his organs.

A team of doctors harvested the liver, kidneys, and skin in accordance with the guidelines of the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu.Under organ allocation procedures, the liver, one kidney, and skin were sent to a private hospital in Coimbatore, while the other kidney was allotted to a private hospital in Erode for transplantation.Doctors and recipients lauded the family’s noble gesture, stating that the donation would inspire greater awareness about organ donation in society.
