FIFA World Cup 2026, Brazil Vs Japan: Japan’s hopes of making an unprecedented run to the latter stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026 face their sternest examination tonight, when they meet Brazil in a last 32 clash at the Houston Stadium. The contest carries a deeper narrative, pitting Japanese football against the nation that has played the biggest role in shaping its modern development.
The Samurai Blue arrived in North America targeting a historic place in the final.
Confidence has grown over the last four years after landmark victories against Germany, Spain and England, strengthening belief that Japan can compete with the world’s elite.

Standing in their way, however, is Brazil in Houston, a matchup that carries significance far beyond the knockout stage because of the South American country’s lasting impact on Japan’s professional game.
When the J-League was established in 1993, its architects drew heavily from the Brazilian model. Japanese clubs also turned to Brazil for talent, bringing in a wave of accomplished players who helped raise standards across the league.
Among the biggest names was Zico, the playmaker from Brazil’s celebrated 1982 World Cup side, who came out of retirement to play for Kashima Antlers. Fellow Brazil internationals Bismarck and Elivelton also joined the league, beginning a steady influx of Brazilian national team players into Japanese football.
That connection only deepened. By the end of the 1990s, seven members of Brazil’s 1994 World Cup-winning squad including captain Dunga had either played or were playing in Japan, contributing to the rapid growth of the domestic game.
“Anyone who hasn’t been paying attention to Japanese football will be surprised," says Cesar Sampaio, who played for Brazil at the 1998 World Cup while contracted to J-League club Yokohama Flugels. “I am not. “Since I was there I learned that Japanese football is improving, year after year, step by step. Their discipline was something that always appeared to be fantastic. But now they have fantastic players such as (Daizen) Maeda and (Ayase) Ueda. They have a great lineup, they played well in their three games and facing Brazil will be their ultimate challenge."
Japan has produced memorable victories over Brazil, although never at a World Cup. The most famous came at the 1996 Olympic Games, where a 1-0 upset earned the nickname the ‘Miracle in Miami’.
More recently, Moriyasu’s team defeated Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil 3-2 in a friendly in Tokyo in October.
The two nations have crossed paths only once before on football’s biggest stage. At the 2006 World Cup in Dortmund, Japan, coached by Zico, lost 4-1 to bow out of the tournament.
That squad included Alessandro Santos, one of three Brazil-born players to represent Japan across its eight World Cup appearances. Defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka became the latest to do so when he helped Japan reach the round of 16 at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
