In a tragic accident, a 21-year-old woman died when two rope jumping instructors threw her from a bridge without first harnessing her to security equipment.
The woman, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, could be seen going for rope jumping on Saturday at Ponte do Esqueleto, an abandoned bridge in the municipality of Limeira. She had reportedly asked the instructors to launch her from the bridge in aeroplane style, with two instructors hoisting her above their shoulders as she spread out her arms.
In a video that went viral on social media, two men in white helmets could be seen launching Freitas into the 130-foot drop. As she was being launched, an onlooker could be heard screaming, “the rope, people, the rope" at the instructors. Meanwhile, the instructors could be seen wearing a harness.

The woman was buried on Sunday in Sao Paulo state.
According to Associated Press, police have arrested three men who worked for the company offering rope jumps over the young woman’s death. An investigation that could lead to murder charges has also been initiated.
After the video of the incident went viral, many have called the death a case of negligence.
Like bungee jumping, rope jumping is an extreme sport but it differs in the type of cord used and the motion of fall. While in bungee jumping elastic rubber cords are used, creating a vertical, bouncing effect, rope jumping uses low-stretch climbing ropes in which the fall is in a horizontal, pendulum swing fashion.
