Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 5 to 8, with partnership and cooperation among Global South nations high on the agenda.
At the BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Modi will participate in discussions on major global challenges, including reforms in global governance, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, ethical use of artificial intelligence, climate action, global health, and financial collaboration.
PM Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit. In Brasília, he will meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to deepen the Strategic Partnership, with discussions likely to cover key sectors such as trade, defence, energy, space, technology, agriculture, and health.
Notably, PM Modi’s Rio visit is part of his five-nation tour in July 2025, beginning with a two-day visit to Ghana on July 2-3. This will be his first bilateral visit to Ghana and the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in more than three decades.
After his visit to Ghana, the Prime Minister will travel to Trinidad and Tobago from July 3 to 4, at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. He will then head to Argentina from July 4 to 5 for bilateral talks with President Javier Milei.
From July 5 to 8, PM Modi will be in Rio to attend the BRICS Summit.
Concluding his multi-nation tour, PM Modi is scheduled to visit Namibia on July 9, following an invitation from President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
About Brics
BRICS, originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded in 2010 with the inclusion of South Africa.
In a major development in 2024, the group extended membership to six additional countries: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Indonesia is also expected to formally join the bloc soon, following a unanimous decision made at the 2023 BRICS Summit.
Notably, BRICS unites eleven major emerging economies, collectively accounting for approximately 49.5 per cent of the global population, about 40 per cent of the world’s GDP, and nearly 26 per cent of global trade.
India-Brazil Ties
During a phone call with PM Modi on May 8, a day after India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed strong support for India’s stance against terrorism.
Brazil also remains India’s largest trading partner in South America, while India ranks as Brazil’s ninth-largest trading partner. In the financial year 2024–25, bilateral trade between the two nations reached USD 12.20 billion.
Further, Indian companies have a growing presence in Brazil across sectors like pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and energy.
Defence cooperation is also a key area of focus during PM Modi’s visit to Brazil.
Both countries are jointly developing Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, and Brazilian aerospace firm Embraer has signed an MoU with Mahindra to collaborate on the C-390 Millennium Multi-Mission Transport Aircraft.
