Arsenal talisman Bukayo Saka has reportedly signed and sealed his new contract at the North London club. According to BBC Sport, the contract will run through 2031, making Saka the best-paid player at Arsenal, with the Number 7 set to earn over £300,000 (approx Rs. 3.67 crore) a week.
The report said negotiations over a fresh contract to tie Saka down have been underway for close to 12 months. Saka had given his word in January that he would remain at the club.
Although he had already extended his stay in 2023 on a deal running until 2027, the latest agreement secures the 24-year-old’s prime years in north London, while also reflecting his value as the face of the club.
The extension provides a significant lift for Arsenal, who are chasing trophies on multiple fronts and aiming to end their silverware drought dating back to 2020. Securing the core of their squad on long-term contracts to maintain stability is also an important factor in that.
Saka joins William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly, all of whom agreed to extended deals over the summer. According to other reports, there’s a good chance Arsenal can announce it before the North London derby, away at Tottenham Hotspur, on Sunday.
On the pitch, Saka is having a middling year — ravaged by short bouts of injuries — and has contributed seven goals in 33 appearances across competitions.
Under Mikel Arteta, Arsenal currently hold a four-point lead at the summit of the Premier League. They are set to meet Manchester City in the EFL Cup final in March, while also progressing to the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League and the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Arteta loves Saka-Madueke competition
Saka came through the Hale End academy and helped the club during its most gruelling phase in the early 2020s. That also meant playing week-in-week-out, which some observers feel is showing in his struggles with injuries at the moment.
But this year, Arsenal have helped him with the big-money signing of Noni Madueke from Chelsea. But Arteta’s interactions with the media suggest that Madueke is not only taking minutes from Saka to allow him enough recovery time, but also pushing him to be his best.
“We were in the gym and they were testing and everybody was trying to compete with each other and those two were hilarious as usual," Arteta said at a press conference ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Wolves.
“It is great to witness because it is natural. The way they like each other so much, they are constantly together and there is certain competition for places, but they take it from an incredible side. The team and them get the benefit of that."
Interestingly, injuries to Martin Odegaard (who’ll miss Wolves) and Mikel Merino (out of the season) have allowed Saka and Madueke to play together. Saka played in the Number 10 role for just the second time in his career against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup and looked sensational.
Arteta had said that he’d like to see more of it soon, which might continue in the Wolves game.
