Pune: A burglary suspect trying to evade arrest sustained a bullet injury on his shin after an assistant police inspector fired his service weapon to thwart a knife attack in Ramtekdi, Wanowrie, around 5.30am on Sunday.API Ganesh Raikar from the Baner police station injured his hand while blocking the knife attack.Based on Raikar’s complaint, the Wanowrie police have registered an FIR on the charge of attempt to murder against the injured suspect Karansingh Rajputsingh Dhudhani (29) of Ramtekdi and his accomplice Bitusingh Shyamsingh Kalyani.Police later took Dhudhani, who has been booked and arrested in 30 cases of robbery, theft and house burglaries in the past, to the Sassoon General Hospital.
“We have arrested Kalyani, who managed to flee the scene after the police team opened fire,” said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Gauhar Hasan.Police were looking for the two men in connection with a June 15 burglary case in Baner. Dhudhani had been out on bail for the past three months, and was checked by the police on June 11.After the Baner homeowner lodged a complaint, the police studied CCTV camera footage and spotted the two men on a scooter.
Police checked its registration number and realised that the scooter was also stolen and a vehicle theft case had been registered at the Ambegaon police station near Katraj.Senior inspector Chandrashekhar Sawant of the Baner police said, “We tracked the GPS movement of the vehicle to Ramtekdi area, and then Raikar and five constables went to Ramtekdi to nab them.”The team spotted the two men on the scooter in galli no. 5 in Ramtekdi, the FIR stated.
Dhudhani, who was riding the scooter, spotted the police and charged at them recklessly even as police asked him to stop and surrender. Dudhani failed to manoeuvre properly in the congested lane and threatened police. He then pulled out the knife and charged at Raikar, while Kalyani fled, the FIR added.Raikar took the blow on his hand and then pulled out his service pistol and fired a round at his leg. Dhudhani collapsed on the spot, a police officer said, and added that he also pulled out a razor and tried to cut himself before he was stopped and moved to the hospital. Joint police commissioner Sanjay Darade, Hasan and other senior officers reached the spot.
