Campaigning for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in southern Assam’s Cachar district on Sunday (April 5, 2026), Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh projected Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the protector of his State’s boundary and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as a friend of Manipuri people of Assam.

Cachar, which adjoins Jiribam district of Manipur, has a sizeable population of Manipuri (Meitei) people.

Mr. Singh urged the Manipuri people of Cachar to back the BJP-led government, underscoring the Chief Minister’s gesture in making Manipuri an associate official language in Assam.

“People of Cachar always love Manipur. They help Manipur in many issues, including ILP (Inner-Line Permit, a temporary travel document required for Indians to enter Manipur) and the inclusion of the Manipuri language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India,” he said, while seeking votes for the BJP’s Udharbond candidate Rajdeep Goala.

Urging the Manipuri people to vote for the ‘accommodative’ BJP under Mr. Sarma, Mr. Singh praised the Prime Minister for safeguarding Manipur’s territorial integrity.

The Manipur Chief Minister also campaigned for the BJP’s Hailakandi candidate Milon Das.

Seven Manipur BJP legislators and State BJP president A. Sharda Devi accompanied the Chief Minister during the campaign.
