The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition is facing severe internal friction and an existential crisis following a surprise meeting between Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The meeting has triggered a fierce war of words, intense speculation over shifting political alliances, and public frustration from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT).

Will MVA survive? News18 explains.

THE RECENT TRIGGER: PAWAR-SHINDE MEETING

Sharad Pawar held an informal meeting with his party MLAs inside the Vidhan Bhavan. Crucially, the gathering took place in the official chamber of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also formally welcomed and felicitated Pawar.

The NCP (SP) and Shinde’s office maintained that it was a non-political courtesy visit. They noted that both leaders had just attended a high-powered committee meeting on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute.

THE BACKLASH: UDDHAV SENA REJECTION

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut openly lashed out at Pawar for “glorification of traitors". He stated that the Uddhav Thackeray faction felt “disturbed and hurt" by Pawar sitting in the office of the man who engineered the rebellion that dismantled the original MVA government.

Raut warned that such highly publicised interactions dilute the opposition’s narrative and damage the veteran leader’s credibility before the public.

NCP (SP) leadership quickly fired back at the Uddhav camp, accusing them of double standards. They stated that politics runs on “arithmetic, not emotions" and remarked that if a single meeting could shake the MVA, its foundation must be weak.

EXISTING FRACTURES AND ALLIANCE BUZZ

The backlash is magnified by a series of underlying setbacks that the MVA has recently faced:

  • The MP Exodus: The MVA was already reeling from the shock defection of six Shiv Sena (UBT) Lok Sabha MPs to Eknath Shinde’s ruling camp.
  • Skipped Meetings: During a crucial MVA strategy meeting called by Uddhav Thackeray to address the defections, 23 out of the alliance’s 60 total legislators failed to show up. Sharad Pawar and other top NCP leaders also skipped that assembly.
  • Uddhav’s Public Doubts: A frustrated Uddhav Thackeray openly questioned his partners during that meeting, asking, “Are we truly together?".
  • Realignment Rumours: Congress leaders, including Prithviraj Chavan, added fuel to the fire by hinting at extreme “instability", stating that several opposition MPs appear restless, giving rise to intense speculation about back-channel communications and potential switches to the NDA.

WHAT LIES NEXT FOR THE MVA?

The MVA finds itself navigating a delicate balancing act to ensure its survival:

1. Damage Control & Reassurance

The immediate priority for the MVA is preventing an open split. Sanjay Raut has stated he intends to raise the issue directly with Sharad Pawar. The NCP (SP) will need to explicitly reassure the Thackeray faction that their ideological commitment to the opposition bloc remains unchanged, despite cordial legislative interactions.

2. Synchronised Assembly Floor Strategy

With the Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Legislature underway, the MVA must show visible, coordinated resistance. Opposition leaders from Congress, NCP (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT) are attempting to plan joint outreach, uniform floor strategies, and protests to counter the perception that the alliance has collapsed.

3. Transitioning from Emotions to Hard Arithmetic

As the NCP (SP) pointed out, the alliance will have to pivot away from emotional rhetoric regarding past betrayals and focus heavily on survival metrics. The leadership must fast-track strict seat-sharing calculations and structure enforceable pacts to assure nervous MLAs that remaining with the MVA offers a viable path to electoral victory.
